Continue on past Avenue O through Gravesend, chartered in 1643, by religious outcast and widowed British exile Lady Deborah Moody—the first woman in colonial America accorded a land patent. A fervent and persecuted Anabaptist who held that only believing adults should be baptized into the church, and established Gravesend as an oppression-free zone. Her land was the only English settlement in Dutch New Netherland, (one of the original six eventually consolidated into Kings County); she soon attracted a hodgepodge of religious followers. If you care to make a slight detour here, turn right on Avenue U, then left on Van Sicklen Street, and pedal around the original historic square, turning left on Village Road South past the Old Gravesend Cemetery (which dates back to the mid 17th century). Purportedly, the lady herself is buried here in an unadorned unmarked grave somewhere. Cross McDonald Avenue and follow Village Road South to Village Road East, swinging left to Gravesend Neck Road. At Gravesend Neck, hang a right and ride back to Ocean Parkway. Turn right on OP and pick up the bikeway again at the next cross street, Avenue W, then continue to Coney Island and the boardwalk.
